Where I stayed
Well I have finally settled down to finish off my travel blog from the adventures we had in Asia in 2008 a little late coming I know but the memories are still there in the main part so I thought that while I am back here in sunny Manchester I would jot them down and get them on me pod.
Ok so I mentioned that we had arranged a drive along the Flores coast towards labaunbajo via the small towns of Ende, Ruteng and bajawa with a really cool driver we got quite a good deal and the ride was in pure comfort our stays in ruteng and Bajawa were limited to a night in each due to the short length of our visa we found both towns completely empty of tourists and the accommodation on the grubby expensive side.
This was not so hard shakes though we had become a little used to it by now and I can imagine that we were looking a little bit grubby our selves. I have to add though Flores is certainly a beautiful destination to travel through and at times is very spectacular with what seems like endless mountains and volcanoes.
The people who reside in the various villages on this route were very proud of them and kept the lot very neat and tidy. Through a combination of buses and the pure luck of bagging a lift in a pimped out 4x4 we arrived hot sweaty and very tired in Labaunbajo the eastern gateway to Flores and more importantly the jumping point for Komodo National park where we had hoped to spend a few bucks on a trip to see the Monster sized lizards.
What a shock to see more than 2 tourists at the same time the place was really quite busy with people who head headed over from Bali to get out and see the Lizards on day trips and such like. After sniffing out a nice room the 3 of us had some grub and a few beers before calling it a night. If I remember rightly they stuck all 3 of us into quite a nice room. The sleeping arrangements however were a little disheartening to say the least Stephen had been given a mattress on the floor which was fine for our baby faced friend however me and the serious one were lobbed together in what looked like the bridal bed all 4 posts of it, lace satin ribbons and all, we looked like a right pair. After a failed attempt to get Stefan to take a shift for a change I snuggled in for the night.
Next day we set about making a plan (The Germans words not mine) Our Stefan loved a plan and his plan after all this time in our company was to locate an island close by and work on his tan. He had just spent a long time out in the Australian bush and seen plenty of lizards no talk of adventure would budge him into attending this gig. The problem he had at the moment was that he could not find an island in which to sit (This in Indonesia, land of 18,000 islands) this was stressing him out a touch and it was looking like our threesome would be broken by sheer lack of blue sea and white sand in the Vicinity.
While Stefan was poring over the maps, I set about trying to get us a ride into the National park this is not a very difficult task as there are dozens of locals offering day trips. The problem is trying to find the right person without getting ripped off or drowned. After a day of pounding the beat we were still short of a boat ride and feeling a little confused about what to do.
Stefan on the other hand was sorted he had located a nice little island close by, where he planned to spend a few days soaking up the rays. While he was sorting the transport out in the bar I over heard a guy going through some details of a diving expo out in the national park which sounded quite promising. After a little bit of chat and negotiations we had decided to join forces and share the cost of a 3 trip into the park staying on board after which they would drop us at the same island where Stefan was holing up. Man I love it when a plan comes together.
