Where I stayed
Today is Saturday January 23. So...what has been happening since we
last wrote. In Bangkok we went to many Wats (Temples) and saw many
Buddha's. Some worth mentioning include- the Grand Palace, Wat Pho
(where there is a huge reclining Buddha (see picture)). We also saw
Lucky Buddha where we both hit the gong for good luck. And Big Buddha!
We had the famous street Pad Thai- delicious, and even more famous
Banana Pancake! I think one night we even had the banana pancake for
dinner (cause it is so good and so cheap). The pad thai with egg is 25
baht/each and a spring roll for 10 baht. So we would eat for 70 baht
(approximately $2.30 Canadian!). The banana pancake was 20 baht/each
(around .66 cents!).... as I (Rochelle) write this, Riley laughs at my
constant conversions. I go by the approximate 30 to 1, as it would be
way too difficult to do the 28 to 1! ...again...he laughs...but what
would he do if I wasn't here to do the conversions! ha ha!
On our last day in Bangkok, we took our first Tuk Tuk, Riley bought a
fitted suit and shirt (which we will pick up at the end of our trip),
and we had our first Thai massage. We went for the 1 hour foot massage-
but it was really more of a full leg massage. They must have liked us-
or maybe it is usual...they also gave us a head massage at the end
too!! All for 200 baht, plus 100 baht tip each. So a total of 600 baht
(~$20 Canadian).
We left Bangkok on Thursday night at 9:40pm on the night bus, and
arrived in Chiang Mai around 8am. It was a "1st class" ticket, but the
seats in front of us were broken, so they laid back much further then
they should have! Riley pretty much had a lady in his lap for most of
the trip. They played a loud Thai soap opera show and Thai game show
until midnight, and then they finally shut off the lights. Drive was
good otherwise. Got a little bumpy at a couple parts, but we both got
some sleep through it all.
We arrived in Chiang Mai on Friday morning and took a tuk tuk to our
hotel. We didn't think they would let us check in yet, since it was
only 9am- but they did. We showered up and took a nap! We then did a
bunch of walking around- we got lost! ha ha. We were walking in the
complete opposite direction! For a good 15-20 blocks! We then started
heading the right way to the Old City. We checked out some more Wat's
and Buddha's. Highlights was the Wat Chedi Luang.
We found a delicious vegetarian Restaurant ("AUM Restaurant"), and on
our walk back to the hotel, we found another vegetarian restaurant
("Taste from Heaven"), where Rochelle is probably going to take a
cooking class on Monday when Riley goes golfing.
Saturday (today) we went to the Chiang Mai zoo. Did a lot of walking
again (we continue to choose to walk instead of take the cheap wheeled
options)- many Thais seem to think we are crazy (maybe due to the
heat)- but we need the exercise if we want to keep eating those Banana
pancakes!
We went to the oldest Wat in Chiang Mai- Wat Chiang Man. On our walk,
we came across a back alley cock fight. There was about 10 Thais, and
over 10 roosters in cages (and 2 already in the ring fighting). We
didn't stay to see which one "won". It made us think of the Seinfeld
episode.... "Little Jerry". ha ha
We then went to dinner at AUM Restaurant again- so delicious!
We are in Chiang Mai until Tuesday morning, and then we head to Pai for a few days. We then head to Cambodia after that!
That's all for now.
Love to all, R&R.
