The Good:

We had a wonderful ride today. It wasn't too long. It was hot but bearable. We had a nice tailwind. Most importantly, it was beautiful. We've finally left the farms and entered into rich, green, forested hills of New England. We had at least 20 miles on really nice bike paths by the river.

For dinner we had a cookout at the hotel. I had a grilled chicken sandwich, a hamburger, grilled corn on the cob, yummy "natural" potato chips, yummy baked beans and some gatorade. It hit the spot. I haven't had real grilled food in a long time and I was really craving it. It was still nothing like the chicken and burgers Mom can make on the charcoal after a day of skiing at Stormy Lake, but it was a step in the right direction.

The Bad:

Jon rode by himself today. Scott didn't feel like pulling. Dad is our star rider and we needed to keep his legs fresh for the next two days when we have a huge amount of climbing.  All of this somehow resulted in me pulling all day. I had a good day, so I didn't mind, but it was a fair amount of work. I didn't go super hard since it didn't seem like I was going to get any assistance today. I was right. I didn't.

Also bad is the fact that my favorite rider, Andy Schleck, was dethroned today in the Tour de France. It's looking like 2nd place for him and 3rd place for his brother, Frank. I wanted them to go 1 and 2. I'm not sure why I like them the best. Maybe because they're skinny. Or maybe it's because they look kind of like Matt Nickel.

The Ugly:

This motel. This motel is the ugly. It is the ugliest. For the record, it is a Ramada. It's in terrible shape. I can't fathom why we're staying here. Every time I look around the corner I find something dirty. The ice machine is broken, torn apart, and it lives in a room covered in dirt. The breakfast room has a colony of gnats that surround the juice machine, a batch of day (or more) old waffles on the counter and sticky substances on the tables. Our bathroom was stocked with pool towels (and only two of them) instead of shower towels. And why not, since the pool was closed and full of brown water. The lobby bathroom had no toilet paper, no soap, and no paper towels. What am I supposed to do in there? The doors to the coat room are falling off their hinges, the driveway is full of potholes and the tile floor in the vending room is shattered. At least they have the versus channel and comfortable (but probably unsanitary) beds.

Now is the time to be grateful that among the "must haves" for your cross country trek did NOT include a black light. EEEEEWWWWWW! Mark, this sounds somewhat like the flea bag hotel in Hartford City where your dear wife really got to see what the Collins' were made of. HA. Way to go, Stephen. Pulling all day must have sucked your energy level to next to nothing.
