It was Hammertime today for British Jon and me. Scott wasn't feeling very good and I had some school work that I needed to get finished and submitted as quickly as possible so I left Team Collins and rode on my own. Scott is feeling a little better now... but this morning he hadn't eaten in a while and was felling very weak. Feeling weak translates into taking it easy on the pedals. We had a late start and a time zone change working against us. I rode with Dad and Scott for about 10 miles and did a quick calculation based on remaining distance and current average speed and came to the conclusion that I wouldn't be making it to the hotel until after 4 which wouldn't leave me ample time to do my school work.

I made the decision that it was hammertime and took off. About 5 miles before the SAG stop I caught Jon who was riding with Michelle. I told him I left the family (which doesn't happen often... we almost always ride together). He offered to ride the rest of the way with me and I'm glad he did. From the first SAG stop, through the second SAG stop to about 65 miles I went hammertime and he followed me. It felt good to put out such a hard effort and I can really tell that I've been getting stronger on this trip. Around 65 miles into the ride I started to burn out a bit. I asked Jon to pull for a while and he happily took the lead. He was able to maintain the pace I had been putting out and I got just enough of a break from the draft to keep up for the rest of the ride.

Later in the pool we discussed the ride and decided it was a great ride. I got in early and went to the gas station to pick up a jug of chocolate milk, my favorite post ride drink. I chugged 900 calories of chocolate milk and sat down to do my work. I was able to focus well, I think because of the quality exercise I had been putting in for most of the morning. I finished and submitted my work just before Dad and Scott arrived and then took a break at the outdoor pool. We love outdoor pools on this trip because we can even out our tan-lines! I have the best farmer's tan of my life going on right now; all lines are super-crisp. I've nice white/tan arm cuffs, thigh cuffs, sock cuffs, wrist cuffs and my personal favorite, finger cuffs on each finger due to my fingerless gloves.
