The second day with the bikes, we set out to make it to the top of nearby Mt. Calmanoc. This is a mountain to the north of Tagbilaran City where we hoped to get some scenic shots of the island from up high. Took us a little bit of effort to find the right road to turn onto from the coastal highway, but with the help of some locals, we found it and headed down what turned into an increasingly broken/rough road.
At some point the road just totally devolved into rough doubletrack, winding up steep short hills past small village homes. I can't remember how long we were driving up this mountain for, but it felt like hours. Exhausted and baked by the sun, we almost stopped and turned around a couple times. The "road" kept getting ever more difficult to drive up and at some point, we were staring at a long, very steep climb wondering if we could even get up it with the bikes. Fortunately, we pressed on, never crashed, and eventually were rewarded by reaching the top where we were able to get some decent shots. Too bad the view wasn't much of a cleared overlook though. Oh well, it was still quite an adventure just getting there.
On the way back, driving along the coastal highway again, we stopped by to see Samantha, a huge Burmese python. We weren't brave enough to pay the 75 pesos to climb into the cage and hold the huge snake, but we did take lots of pictures :-)
