Where I stayed
Flutterby Hostel
Back down to sea level and out of the clouds, but now we’re under them. More rain. We drove to Uvita on the coast of Marino Ballena National Park (there’s a peninsula at low tide shaped like a whale tail if viewed from above).
We stayed at the Flutterby Hostel run by a woman who grew up in Half Moon Bay, California (just a few miles from San Mateo where I lived ‘til age 12). She opened a year ago and adds to it when she can, there’s a great kitchen/common area with couches and books, cabins, tepees, lofts with
dorm beds, and camping. She has my dream garden, an edible landscape with huge mango trees (they were there before she came), papaya, banana, and avocado trees, herbs. Also a butterfly aviary in the works.
We woke early to clear skies and walked to the beach to watch the sunrise and heard howler monkeys in the distance, a deep, eerie, echoey howl, sounded like it was coming from a far-away cave. We walked out to the whale tail peninsula and back, then made a hardy breakfast before our big drive over to the Osa Peninsula (we’d read about the rough road).
