Today we got a late start to the day.  I think we were still a little jet-lagged, which mostly means
suffering from sleep deprivation.  We didn't leave the house until 11 am.

We went to the Hippie Fair in Ipanema, which is about a 15+ minute walk from our apartment.  On the way we saw a store that was filled with biscuits and every type of cookie... called Casa do Biscotti...it was crazy.  It was fun to walk around the fair and see the all the different things offered. We bought corn on the cob from a cart in the middle of the isles at the fair.

After the fair we took a quick detour to an elevator that was installed to connect the favela that sits above Ipanema to the beach area.  A favela is Rio's version of a slum or ghetto.  We took the elevator up and enjoyed the views from the top.  The kids looked through the gates at the stacked houses, but we chose to be safe and turn around.  If it weren't for the riots we may have ventured further...

Next, we went to the beach in Ipanema.  There were TONS of people.  It was a Sunday and we are guessing that might explain the number of people.  It was crazy packed.  Ipanema is supposed to be one of the nicest beaches and Rio has been having unusually great weather, so everyone fled to the beach.  The swimwear was small for both men and women.  Speedos and brazilian bikinis, for everyone, not just the fit ones!!!!  At least we didn't encounter any topless or completely nudes. :)

After the beach we raced back to our apartment in hopes to make it to SugarLoaf in time for the sunset.  We raced in and started changing, when we realized that we couldn't find our keys to the apartment!  We let ourselves in, locked the door from inside, and put down the keys.  30 minutes later we found them in the bottom of the backpack where we looked 3 times.  Sooooo, we changed plans, ate dinner in and went out to enjoy the night atmosphere of Copacabana... looking at sandcastles, art, etc...

Have you connected with Ana Franca for recs in Rio? Shirley Aboyme also went there recently with Ana. You should see if they have any local favorite spots. Enjoy!

Yes! We talked on the phone and email a few times before we left! She helped out a lot.

No. As a matter of fact, he didn't bring a single one! He contemplated buying one here. Hasn't pulled the trigger yet.
