Day 4: 20 October 2013

So it turns out here the sun doesn't really rise (or set as we discovered later) because it is so cloudy it just goes from dark blue to light blue! Oh well.

We had booked a jeep-boat-jeep trip to Monteverde (5 hrs) so had time for a quick breakfast in the hotel (more rice and beans) before we were picked up. We were told the road wasn't great but the first part of the trip went well and we were at the boat pretty quickly. We crossed Lake Arenal by boat then continued on. The next part of the journey seemed to take forever as it was really bumpy and windy. As this was supposed to be the good road I would hate to see the other one!

When we arrived in Monteverde we found a hostel and headed off for the Extremo canopy tour - a series of ziplines across the forest. It was fun (slighly terrifying at times as some were 1 km long and 400 ft high) but as it was raining pretty heavily by the end I was glad to be finished. We didn't have much time to relax though as had booked a night walk through the forest for after.

As the weather was still not great I wasn't expecting to see much but our eagle-eyed guide managed to find some local insects, lots of colourful birds, some toucans, a sloth, a huuuuuuuge tarantula, a snake and some butterflies. As there was just 4 of us he told us lots of facts about the animals while we were walking. We have done a lot of tours and organized activities since we arrived so I am excited we are heading to the coast tomorrow where we can chill a bit :)
