So, I have spent a fairly stressful weekend trying to sort everything out. It is amazing what you take for granted in life (things like having money and a phone!!). Luckily, I was not alone when it happened, so thanks to Mark, Alex and Mo who provided food, phones, and moral support! Also to Brian who received a fairly hysterical phone call when I realized a very crucial piece of paper was in the bag as well (but I will get to that in a moment). Next, a muchas muchas gracias to Antonio and his wife Maria, who literally rescued me this weekend, providing phones, money, food and entertainment. I'm not sure what I would have done without them! And last but not least, my Mom, who unfortunately is the one that has to deal with all the financial details in Canada, which is a huge job. I am very thankful to have such kind and generous friends and family to help me out.
So, life goes on. There are still a lot of details to sort out, like a new passport and insurance. Unfortunately because of the overwhelming value of what I had on me, my policy is not going to cover alll of the costs, but such is life. There is a positive turning point in the story...
I have decided to stay in Spain for the summer! I have been offered a position as an au pair (more or less!!), and I have accepted. It is with a wealthy family in Madrid, who is spending the summer at their beach house in Sotogrande. This is on the Costa del Sol, near Marbella. There I will spend the mornings Mon-Fri with the children (4 of them, age 4-12) playing games and working on their English and French. Then I will have the afternoons, evenings and weekends free. I am moving in to their house in La Moraleja (a neighborhood in Madrid) on Sunday!! Crazy. I am pretty excited, they seem really nice, and the job is very cushy (or "easy" for the Spanish readers!), I don't have to cook or clean, just play with the children and work on their language skills. And of course lay on the beach and work on my tan!
So for those of you in Canada, the plans for the summer have changed a bit! I won't be back now until September sometime....it was a hard decision, but an opportunity I can't refuse. So, hopefully I will have a chance to learn some Spanish, but at the very least I get to enjoy Spain for another few months!!
