Before I go in to the beauty that is Venice, I must say it is cold!! Neither of us had any appropriate cold weather gear, and as I will be back in London in a few days (where my winter clothes are) I refuse to buy anything more. Plus I may not be able to lift my backpack if I do! Venice is poetic, romantic, definitely like something out of a movie. It's reputation for being crazy expensive is well deserved, (Marie paid about $8 for a hot chocolate) I still think it is worth it!

As there are no roads (obviously), the main form of transportation is by vaporetto, which are small boats that operate as ferries (about triple the size of the Granville Island ones for the Vancouver crowd!). While not cheap, they are fairly efficient and reliable. Except for the one time when we had the new driver in training, and he kept crashing in to the dock.

Other than that, there are of course the gondolas, which are magical to watch. Venice is not the place to go if you are feeling cynical about love, as you watch couple after couple floating down the canals gazing deeply in to each other's eyes. Marie and I are proof that you can have a great time in Venice while being single. And anyway, there are tons of cute gondoliers!

First stop this morning was Murano Island, famous for it's Venetian glass. If I could only afford to ship everything I wanted back home! We did see a glass blowing demonstration, and still managed to buy a fair bit even with space limitations.

In the afternoon we went down the Grand Canal, wandered some of the streets and other canals, the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's square. After a very full day, we planned to go out on the town for my 'last night' in Italy, unfortunately we were both so exhausted when we finished dinner at 10:30 we never made it off our island!
