After leaving Naples I headed to Pomeii, and then spent 3 days on the Amalfi Coast. Unfortunately the one thing I had my heart set on visiting, the Grotto della Smereldo (Emerald Grotto) was closed due to rough water. Oh well, can't do everything I suppose!

The drive of the coast is one not to be missed. It's about 50 km long, and is an extremely winding narrow road, most of which is a few hundred metres drop down to the sea. The water is green, and the whole area is very lush. It sort of reminded me of Santorini in Greece, with these villages perched high above the sea on cliffs. However Santorini has next to no vegetation, while the Amalfi Coast has tons of fruit trees, vines, shrubs etc. As it is now fall, some of the vines are turning red, as they creep up the sides of buildings, which is gorgeous.

The road is so winding that it takes almost 2 hours to drive the 50 km, and many people feel sick to their stomach afterward! It can be a very hairy drive, as at many points there is only room for one vehicle. A couple of times on the bus we had to back up around a few corners in order for a bus coming the other way to get through! It can be a bit unnerving, as looking out the window all you can see is the water way below you.

The weather is a lot warmer too, which is great. Some people were swimming and laying on the beach in bikinis, I didn't think it was quite that warm! I did spend an afternoon laying in the sun reading my book though, very relaxing. I met a couple girls at the first hostel, none of us liked it though so we moved the second night. The second place was a 17th century convent, it was a lot better!

I have completely changed my plans for Italy, my itinerary is constantly evolving. I decided to skip Matera, and head to Rome next. I might go to Nice while I am in the area. We'll see! 3 weeks till I head back to England...
