Today our group went to the Acropolis. IT WAS AMAZING!!! The buildings are huge and so beautiful. We saw te spot where Socrates died and the hill where St. Paul preached to the Greeks. We saw two of the 40 remaining Byzantine churches. Then we went to the National Archialogical Museum and saw all sorts of artifacts and statues. I gazed on the face of Agamemnon. (haha...nerdy joke) But seriously, Athens is absolutely amazing. Parts of it look just like San Francisco or New York and there are apartments everywhere. I swear every building is apartments. It's a crazy city. It really is a mixture of all different cultures and traditions. East meets West. And luckily my Ancient Greek is coming in handy. I can read a lot of the signs and at the museum I could read some of the words on the artifacts which was really amazing. I got lots of good pictures but in Greece they don't allow people to be in the pictures with any of the artifacts. They think its disrespectful. So none of my pictures have people in them. Not that I'm uploading pictures yet anyway. I'm not sure I can at this cafe but next time I'll try to include pictures.
After a fun morning of hiking the Acropolis, museum-going and sightseeing I got back to the hotel and sat by the pool for awhile and read. (I am in school afterall) One of the girls in the program is a water aerobics instructor and she gave us a quick workout! :) Then we went out to dinner at a great restaurant called Zaxos and the waiters had a good time trying to understand our horrible Greek. But they ended up being really nice and teaching us how to count to five. Then we got gelato, baklava and ouzo from a store next to the restaurant. The ladies were very nice. Everyone knows English but I'm trying to use Greek as much as possible. Please (parakalo) and Thank you (eucharisto) are really the only two things you need to get around but I throw in a Hello/Goodbye (yia sas) every once in awhile. One of the girls took Greek in high school so she is very handy to have around. Tonight I don't know what we're going to do but I'm sure it will end early since we're still all a little jet-lagged. More later!
