Since I was living near Central Park I thought I should at least have a walk through it, and it was a nice day with the usual joggers and people playing baseball. As I walked through the park I decided to get out of the usual tourist traps and sample something really American, therefore I decided to go over to Coney Island which is in the south of Brooklyn. The subway goes all the way to Coney Island and as it was a hot day there were lots of New Yorkers heading over to the beach, which is next to the funfair.

Coney Island is brilliantly trashy with various old rides and funfair attractions. My favourite funfair game was "Shoot the Freak" which was constructed in a dirty abandoned area between two buildings. Basically a poor summertime employee had to put on armour to become "the freak", then all the people playing the game got to shoot him with paintball guns. At this time I felt like a proper American as I stood there eating a corn dog on Coney Island, watching Shoot the Freak while listening to Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" on my iPod. After picking up my Official Redneck Association membership card I left on the subway back to Manhattan.

I sent Nick a quick SMS to meet up for a couple of farewell drinks in town. It was about finishing time from work and drinking beer is of course far more important than working anyway. Over a couple of beers (Sam Adams) I got a few travelling recommendations from Nick who had already been to a few of the places I'm going to. It's always useful to get recommendations for places to visit rather than just relying on guide books.

All in all it has been a great time in New York and I'm sure I'll be back again sometime in the future. There's always something happening in NYC and perhaps next time I might be able to stay a little longer.
