We flew into JFK in NY and this was the first part of the journey which I was actually dreading..wasnt looking forward to the train route from the airport to Penn Station where we would catch the train down to Washington, was afraid of getting lost somehow and missing the train. In the end it was really easy and even had time for dinner before we got on the train. Shouldnt worry so much!!!

We got into Washington about 9.30pm, a long day after flying out of LA at 7am. As we got out of Union Station we got a glimpse of the Capitol Hill building before taking a cab to our hostel. Bit of a drama in the hostel as we got stuck in a dodgy room for one night while our one for the rest of the week got new carpets fitted. I say dodgy, it wasnt that bad...except for the banging pipes!! We didnt sleep that well and the next morning had to find 4 hours to fill as we had to check out of that room, but then was told we couldnt check back into our other room till 2pm!! Not a great start to Washington DC!! Anyway, once we were dressed and showered we then took a walk down to the White House, which I had expected to be bigger. Was still a good photo opportunity and also had the experiance of a few nutters/protesters outside which added some comedy value. We then walked round the back of the White House and also had a look at the traditional xmas tree which Elly was dissapointed with...least the tree was being circled by a toy train set with tanks on it. Very traditional!! After a large dinner we then went back as the lack of sleep the night before was taking its toll!!

Next day we took a walk around the Museum of American History, didnt realise it was so big, spend about 5 hours walking around it, and no surprises that the biggest area of the museum was about the US's involvment in wars. Still was very interesting and we both learnt a bit we feel. Was planning to see the air and space museum too but ran out of time due to the American History museum being so big!!

Following day we decided to walk round all the big monuments scattered around the capital. On the map it seemed do-able to fit most of them in. So we headed off to the Jefferson memoral which is on the bank of the Potomac River, after there we headed off to the Korean war memorial via the Roosevelt memorial. After the Korean war memorial we went to the Lincoln memorial which is at the end of the reflection pool which looks down towards the Washington monument. We then walked to the Vietnam wall which lists all the dead and missing soldiers of the Vietnam war. Was a bit spooked to just randomly look at one and the name was the same as mine!! Elly was a bit moved by it all as she spoke to a guy there who was in the war and gave her a load of info about it. We then walked down to the WW2 memorial before deciding to walk all the way to the Marines memorial. When we got there we must have walked constantly for 4-5 hours and was aching so got the metro back. We stopped for a well deserved pint or three before heading back to the hostel.

On the last day we checked out the Air and Space museum and also the Capitol Hill building. A slow day for us as it was our last but we did have to visit a shop to buy an extra hat, scarf and gloves as we are feeling the cold a bit more than we thought!! A quick visit to Chinatown for lunch before we got back to pack for the early train the next day. NY here we come!!
