Where I stayed
The Sands, Onetangi
31st January 2011 - Happy 3rd Birthday Max! He was soooo proud to be three! We got the ferry over to Waiheke Island & our beautiful apartment overlooking Onetangi Beach. On Friday 28th there was a massive cyclone over the island that left up to 2 million horse mussells on our usually white sands beach, which was a real shame as it was like walking on glass for the kids feet :(
The weather was warm but cloudy most the week so with the beach out of the picture we took on some other activities. We drove round the very small island in a day (would have taken much less time but we stopped every 10 seconds to get out the car and marvel at the views), it is absolutely stunning! As you imagine the kids level of appreciation stuck in a warm car all day looking at the hills wasn't quite conducive. I wondered how this stunning environment would be viewed through the eyes of the young so said to Charlie - "Wow look at the views - what do you think of this place Charlie" to which she replied "I need a poo!!!" There are just some experiences you can't appreciate until your on the older side of 30! Needless to say we hit the park and then this place became a lot 'cooler'!!
We did however try our hands at a bit of golf! After completing the first tee at least 10 over par and hitting the ball more over the next green than my own the kids & I gave up and hit the cakes at the coffee shop!
Recommendation for those with young kids - as beautiful as Waiheke is 5 days is definately enough with young kids!
After the floods in Queensland, Cyclone in NZ and Eartquakes down south island we are now known as the storm chasers!!! Fingers crossed these volcano's behave themselves!!!!
