For some reason, it seemed to take the best part of a day to travel from Punta Del Diablo to La Pedrera......IŽm not sure there is a bus schedule as such in Punta Del Diablo, I think you just show up at the bus stop (which consists of patch of sand outside the shop) and wait. Two changes later we arrived at our campsite which was inconveniently neither in La Pedrera or neighbouring La Paloma and instead in the middle of nowhere!! We were the only campers...no surprises there then! Starving, we decided to walk along the main road into La Pedrera which was a pretty little town by the sea ...but absolutely dead! Where the hell is everyone??? It is 28 degress outside and they call this the Žoff seasonŽ !! What the hell!! Supposedly things get busy around Christmas until March but given it is mid December, you would think things would be starting to ramp up....but oh no, not in Uruguay, two weeks to go and it looks like they are still building half the town. Crazy. Anyway....still starving, we comb the town for something to eat...nada! Nowhere open, no chance of a bit to eat until 8:30 or 9. And so it was......a large packet of sharing crisps and a litre of beer and to the beach we went, hiding in the rocks from the local families who probably thought we were some troublesome tourists. At last 8:30 came and we had pizza...the only people in the restaurant...again!!

The Lonely Planet says that this is a great time to visit Uruguays beaches as its much cheaper in the off season. They fail to mention that the place is deserted and there are no shops, restaurants or hostels open.

It was time to move on....
