Friday 4 August
Arrived in Sydney - it was pouring down. They say this is the worst weather in 40 years, but we don't believe them! We went to the aquarium.

Saturday/Sunday/Monday 5-7 August
Met up with Karen's brother Graham and his girlfriend, Anne. Had lunch with them on Manley beach and the kids went for a dip. Went for dinner Saturday night with Irish and Australian relatives.
We saw lots of Sydney: the Opera House, the Rocks, and whilst Stephen and Thomas and Lucy climbed the Harbour Bridge Karen escaped to the Hyatt for a while with Alice! We had dinner in Glebe on Sunday night and at the top of the Australia Place tower on Monday night.

Tuesday 8 August
Flew from Sydney to Ayers Rock. Picked up our car from the airport (possibly the smallest airport in the world?) and drove to the Desert Gardens hotel. Crashed by the (Aussie-style sub zero) pool. Had dinner and went to bed early. I think we are all still jet lagged!

Wednesday 9 August
The 'Red Centre' of Australia is indeed a dangerous place. We very nearly did not manage to escape from the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet. With that peril behind us we tackled the road to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and walked along Walpa Gorge, which is stunning.
Then we drove to Uluru (Ayers Rock). Stephen, Thomas and Lucy climbed the rock whilst Karen and Alice set up base camp and closely monitored the climb from the safety of the car park. There is no underestimating it: it is one hell of a climb. After watching sunset at the rock, we tackled the all-you-can-eat dinner buffet. It has been quite a day!
