Day 111 Friday 18/02/05 Port Douglas - Cairns

We were picked up at 8 and boarded Quicksmart - a lovely cataraman. We sailed for almost 2 choppy hours to the outer reef. The outer reef is basically the very end of Australia - the Continental shelf and international waters are next! Taking Sue Lord's advice we took sea sickness tabs before heading out - and, unlike a few others, were fine. It is a constant bounce bounce bounce - not rolling seas. Stewart was trying his first ever dive! Sadly the mask felt rather claustrophic and too constricting so he almost chickened out when just into the water. The dive instructor looked after him and eventually got him down the 10m rope to the ocean floor. It was just stunning - his first ever view of the coral & tropical fish was at their level. 20 minutes later Stewart was back on board. Gillian snorkelled at this site. We had two more sites to go to and we snorkelled together at them. At good sites snorkelling isn't that different to diving for a beginner - a beginner diver is busy concentrating on the dive equipment and not hitting coral - we were told that it gets better the more you dive. While snorkelling we passed over very shallow reefs and saw some really beautiful coral - and we just can't describe the colour and amount of beautiful tropical fish we saw. It is awesome. We had a lovely lunch on board before heading back to Port for 5ish. We then boarded another cataraman which took us along the coast to Cairns. We had pizza before heading to the bus station to get the 00.15 bus south.
