Where I stayed
Just had the most stunning day. We decided to treat ourselves and went on a glacier/wildlife cruise in the Prince William Sound. The weather was spectacular and it was an unbelievable 10 hour trip. We saw stellar sea lions, lots of humpback whales (so close that we could see the barnacles on them), sea otters sunning themselves on their backs, killer whales (Orcas), dall's porpoises, harbour seals and then lovely birds including tufted puffins and horned puffins and more bald eagles. (There are more than 2,500 pairs of bald eagles in the Valdez area)
We went through a big patch of bits of broken off glacier ice. The captain had to navigate carefully through this. Glacier "debris" can be found 30 kilometers from the source glacier. These pieces are like little blue jewels floating on the water and ice chunks were banging against the boat. We then got to the Meares Glacier.... WOW... The engines were switched off and we just drifted a quarter a mile from the glacier... Just a towering wall of ice.... And the sounds....! Pieces are constantly breaking off and even the little bits make a noise like a thunder clap. This glacier is one of 2 advancing glaciers in Alaska and is the only tide-water glacier? Never expected to be so over-awed by a glacier.... Didn't want to leave it.....

Nice pics, Mom! The glacier looks incredible. When looking at your travel map, it is astounding to see how close to Asia you are...
Does look amazing Ann xx
I just didn't think that I would be so awed by a glacier....! The photos just don't do ir justice.... It's like a 7-stores building of ice...
Xxx (for Pips and Gill)
That's storey.....
Thanks for the kisses mom - even though the comment was from Al!
Loved reading the blog today and your photos are incredible - making me rethink our route for when we start travelling!
Ja, what's going on with those kisses, Mom?
Don't know why I thought it was Pippa.... No name came up?
Xxxx (for Ali)
Oh.... I see the name now.....
Xxxx (Ali)
Fabulous photos! Don't those orcas look menacing? and have to ask for a raven shot sometime. I mean they're sacred to the Tlingits!
P.S. Any tips to refinish sad yellowood/stinkwood chairs?
Got a raven for you yesterday! X
Feel like I should post a comment, just because I feel I'm getting left out on all the 'kisses action'.
Lovely glacier! It looks as cold as Tarkastad there.
Thanks Bru....and Bella and Hector/ miss you all.... Xxx
Looks like you are having an amazing time. All very interesting and different but I have not heard of some of these places. Enjoy yourselves.
Very different to our normal camping... We never light a fire! It's usually just too cold (for us) to sit outside! Would rather be inside with the heater on....! And it's always light so there is no panic to get things done before it gets too dark to find anything...
It's fun to discover a new place each day...X
