I must just say how fantastic it is to get all your comments. It just makes you all feel much closer. I look forward to opening my blog to see who has written something.
Gosh but this month has gone very quickly. It has just been a feast of new sights and experiences.
Got to THE mountain at last, and we were so lucky. We left early in the morning - quite a long drive to get to the Johnston Ridge Observatory - and we were worried all the way that the cloudy weather wouldn't lift. But it was "now or never" because we were especially camped in that area.... Waiting ( almost like base camp!!!) We got our first sighting of Mt St Helens in her full glory... With the sun shining.... It is just amazing to see the big crater in the side of the mountain that was formed in May 1980. We saw a big screen movie about how it all happened - and how regeneration is happening after all the destruction. Scientists certainly learned a lot about volcanoes after that eruption. The movie ended and the curtain went up to show the actual mountain outside - quite dramatic! There was a collective "wow"..... But after the movie, when we went out again to take photos it was clouding over again very fast. A local told us that the mountain is only clearly visible 120 days of the year. On our way down people were just flocking up the pass but they would have missed the spectacular sighting that we got.. The area around there has been planted with Noble Firs, amongst other trees, and their symmetrical branches make such an interesting sight... Almost like looking at those pictures that you have to focus on to find something hidden...
