18 May

Staying now at a town on the Washington/Oregan border, called Walla Walla. It is a really quaint little town and we plan to spend 2 days here. Our big atlas says that this is the friendliest town in the USA!!

It was extremely cold last night and as we were driving through the Lola Pass the temperature was only 30F. ( Have learnt to convert : subtract 32, divide by 9 and multiply by 5!!!!) But freezing is 32! After our swim in the hot pools at Lola last night (the sun goes down very late here) I put my blue bathing costume out to dry (the same costume that attracted all the fish while snorkeling in Mocambique - Pippa!!) and it was frozen this morning....! We saw the cutest little chipmunk at the campsite... Something that I have always wanted to see - who were those little chipmunks who spoke with "helium" voices? Seem to remember Alvin?

From Lola Falls 100 miles of downward windy road, following the Lewis and Clark trail all along the Lochsa River. The Lochsa eventually comes into the Clearwater River again - such big rivers... A lovely wilderness area with trails for walking, kayaking, rafting and horse trails - lots of white water. And the fish endemic to these rivers are the Steelhead Trout and Chinook Salmon. Lots of people were out in their boats catching salmon just at the rapids.

The vehicle is certainly very comfortable with space for 3 people in the front.. The middle seat backrest comes down and it has cup holders and we also use it as an armrest. (You need lots of cup holders here.. So we have 2 on the dash for our insulated coffee cups that we get refilled/ and the others for cool drinks!)
Saw some interesting signs on the road today - one was for littering... $300 fine and 10 days in jail.... And the other said (about seat belts) "Click it or ticket!"

Had a lucky escape yesterday as I was nearly run over crossing the road.... It was a busy road and I noticed red flags on either side of the pedestrian crossing but disregarded them. Read afterwards that you have to use them to flag down the traffic/ cross, and then put them in the little holder on the other side of the road...... OMG.....!
