Once again: if you don't know have the curtesy of going to another person's site. This isn't for the public.

So I went to Austin for the Association of Moving Image Archivists conference. I didn't want to go but I was sitting on the panel for Archiving the Action. It took me two and half months to physically and mentally prepare for that. There were many many people I didn't want to see there. So many people I don't want to have anything to do with. It's funny. During school there were a few dramas a managed to stay out of. I pretty much kept my school life drama free until June. And what happened was that it came back at me two fold. I see all the drama making amends but without me.
So the day of my panel was going to be the worst day of my life for who knows how many years. Seeing people who fucked me over, speaking in front of people... it doesn't get much worse in my little world. AMIA was paying my way, well half my way. I got two nights at the Super 8 motel (fitting) and airplane paid for. Thanks to Tom who worked this out for me.
It was great to see Dave, who always makes me laugh and I saw Jen for a sorry 2 minutes.
I went knowing I was going to spend limited time at the conference and I'm very glad I did that. I found this nice little walk by the river where I stewed over my speech. I found a new cartoon that I could watch compulsively. I went to North Loop where there's a pizza coop, a punk record store and Monkey Wrench books with friendly staff. The bus system is 50 cents! I saw the very first photograph ever taken. But best of all I met some fucking amazing Texans.
I've never gone to a city and called a friend's friend out of the blue that I'd never met. I was thinking of calling John before I left but wasn't sure about the situ of me spending time with Dave and Jen and didn't want to make plans with John and crap out last minute. So instead I called last minute. I was pretty desperate. I had finished my panel and needed to get out of there, yet not be by myself. After some frustrating pay phone to cell phone calls John and Adam pick me up on the corner and drive me to the themed movie theatre on campus. There we met Jessica, John's girlfriend and John's parents. It just happened John's parents were in town. How many people would invite a stranger along when their parents are in town?! Turns out Adam and Chad, who gave me John's number, grew up together. It was pretty sweet. Mr Weiss paid for my movie and dessert afterwards! Everyone was so terribly sweet and nice. The movie wasn't so great but the rest was just fab. It totally saved me from slitting my wrists in the hotel room. The probably worst day of my life was transformed by these people. Little do they know I am indepted to them...
Austin is a cute little city. It's kind of like a cross between portland and tuscon. Chad and Emiko left because people starting turning into cocaine party animals, which is too bad. The north loop and people like Jessica, John and Adam could keep it from going down the drain I suspect. One good thing about the conference was that Yvonne was there - she's got an internship at the CFMDC for archiving their stuff. It was so good to see a friendly familiar face...

I'm not QUITE sure where Austin is so the map pin may be a little off ;)
