So it was my first time in AZ and then I was off to another new state - Rhode Island. I met Jen at school in Rochester and hadn't seen her since the AMIA conference in November. She's a sweatheart. She's doing film archving at the Tennis Hall of Fame. It's a frustrating, challenging and she's learning lots. She's improved their vaults by like 10 fold... Jen just moved to a new place the week before and man is it sweet! 10 min walk to two beaches, wood floors, patio... sigh...
Jen was a little late picking me up and then we got lost! We were suppose to see a Negative Approach spin off band and meet up with Brian from Dropdead but that never happened because neither of us brought the details... Dinner was expensive but good - although the chocolate cake was hardly worth $5 and a monkey could have made it.
Newport is the exact opposite from Tuscon. Every house is virtually on the cultural registry. Very old curvy streets, houses extremely close together. And total tourist town. Fudge was $6.59 a pound. But very pretty and the old buildings were just super. The little cemetary in town had one or two headstones from the early 1700s. Crazy. The weather was really nice - sunny and 70's. We spent Saturday walking around Providence and I got to go to Armegedon Shop. Curiously I did not purchase anything... We visited a library from like 1779. Gorgeous. We ate at Melanies - this vegan joint owned and operated by a young punk woman. Her Philly Cheesesteak was the best thing I had to eat all year. Cheesecake was very good and Jen got a rice xpie square I didn't get to try.
Sunday we spent at the beach. I had a few staticy conversations with David Rice, another Selznick student, who was in Boston and offered to drive me to NYC, on my way to Phili, instead of taking the bus. It was fun to chat on the phone at the beach, but i still hate cell phones. Jen went to a pub to watch a football game (a local kid from Miami U in Ohio needed cheering) and I watched 12 Angry Men. I really like those 50's and 60's films that don't know if they are film, tv or plays. It was pretty good - Henry Fonda's character was a little weird, not your typical hero kind of guy really...
I ate a frozen lemonaid which apparently is the big thing there - I have to say I loved it. Tiny bits of peel in there :)
Jen drove me to the meeting point where i was suppose to meet Dave to ride to NYC but then at the last minute they couldn't wait for me to get there and had to leave. So instead of taking the 8am bus to NYC I had to take the 3pm. I had to make the hard choice of spending only one day in PHilidelphia or just scrapping it and going straight to NYC and not rush it. I figured i should visit a new big city with more than one day to do it so I canceled on Scott. He still thinks I crapped out because of a boy. hmph, I only wish... And then the guy greyhound guy lied - said the trip was about 3 hours... no it was 6 hours. Went through every cotton picking little town from Providence to NYC. New Haven even for krist sakes. I had to see the inside of that train/bus station again. :/ Dinner was junk food...
