Up early today, going out to north shore, funny listening to the news, Hawaiians are talking about how chilly it is, and that if you're heading out to take a jacket, and most were saying they had their heaters on this morning,
I suppose it is their winter, a brisk 16deg C, we just think it's perfect weather. turned into a perfect day, our guide Kaui was absolutely brilliant, he didnt stick to the outlined tour, instead sidetracking a few times through the day, even taking us to his home, and inviting us to stop by if we ever get over this way again, and he meant it!
Saw 5 turtles swimming at one of the stops, and later in the day, there was a few more in the water, and also lucky to find one up on the beach. stopped quite a few times on our way to the north shore, and heard the history as only a native can tell it, his stories came down through his grandfather, and his father before him etc. Was really nice to have this kind of tour, and not someone who was only retelling something they had read. he went off the tour once again taking us to one of the oldest sacred places on this island, over 1000 years old, where he performed a ritual chant, his only request was that we weren't allowed to go too close, and definitely no cameras.
Stopped at a macadamia farm, then he took our food orders and phoned them through to the shrimp truck where we stopped for lunch, no shrimp for us, chicken for David and cheeseburger for me. then onto Turtle Bay Resort, which was just beautiful, where we stopped for just over an hour, and if you wanted you could snorkel, we just explored and had a drink at the bar, very nice.
Then a few more beaches, waves were big today up to 30 ft or more some of them, most of the beaches were .closed then onto Dole plantation, where I knew i wouldn't have time to go through the maze, but was hoping they would have somewhere you could go and overlook it, there wasn't, so next trip we will rent a car and go out there on our own. David had a pineapple icecream which was delicious. Then back to Waikiki, arriving back here about 5:30, an hour later than we should have, but the local knowledge, and off the track places he took us was just amazing. If you're ever coming to waikiki, highly recommend you do the turtle tour on a Friday or a Thursday with Kaui.
