Where I stayed
Well, well, well... Tallinn is absolutely beautiful!! And, I mean, beautiful!
We arrived in Tallinn late on the 19th of June and took a cab to our hotel. The cab ride was definitely a quick one... I don't know if the driver thought we were racing but he was crazy and drove like a maniac. Maybe I should start expecting this from European cab drivers... I don't know...
We got to the hotel (Hotel Shnelli) and I went for a little walk through the city. It's amazing how clean and safe it looked and felt at midnight... Part of it was the fact that it really didn't get dark at all - Tallinn is quite a bit farther north than Halifax, so it makes sense...
The next day we wondered through the city the whole day... We took two trips by bus though the different parts of Tallinn... The city is really green with TONS of parks and protected forest... The main highlight though, definitely was the old town... It was so beautiful, that it felt like you were looking at a postcard the whole time you were there...
It was super clean and full of tourists... Estonians have great beer, which I made sure to try every available variety of... I have to prepare for the main part of the trip after all... Build up the old alcohol tolerance...
On the second day in Tallinn, when we came back to the hotel in the evening there was a ton of people gathered outside and a bunch of emergency vehicles to boot... A train had just run off the tracks right behind the hotel... (which sits directly in front of the train station)
The train apparently overshot the tracks and jumped onto the platform at the end, coming to a stop on top of a nice silver BMW... The story definitely made the news in Estonia...
I guess everybody was OK, and that's the main thing... It was quite the sight... It didn't make for the best sleep that night because crews worked into the wee hours of the morning trying to tow the train back onto the tracks and get it out of the station...
