Another important tidal gate is in the Sound of Islay, through which we motored North today.
It divides the islands of Islay and Jura, is 8 miles long and narrows to 5 cables (that's half a nautical mile for any land lubbers) .

We arrived at Colonsay about half past nine.

We had expected a couple of visitors morring buoys but it was not very clear what was where so we anchored instead.

Sunday morning at Colonsay - Scottish island number six
======================

Colonsay is 8 miles by 3, with a population of 110.

We paddled ahsore at 10.
We walked to the top of the hill (great view) and we walked back down again. There were a suprising number of people about - all tourists with the exception of 2 shepherds with 10 dogs and some misscreant sheep.

The rest of the locals, perhaps, where in the church (service at 11:30)

Lunch, back on board, was gojouns of Pollock in crispy breadcrums. Delighful!

We upped anchor at 2pm and pulled a quarter of a foresail out to keep our speed down to 2 knots so that Viv could try to catch fish, but we couldn't fool them today. After the alloted half an hour we put all sail out and experienced a glorious sailing afternoon. We beat at 55 degrees against a force two and made 5 knots for a couple of hours. Then the wind veered 20 degrees so we tacked onto starboard for half an hour. That took us to within an hours steaming, which is what we need to ensure the batteries are fully charged. Ideal!
