We've made it to Varanasi!

I can't really begin to describe how hard going the last few days have been but the few words below will hopefully paint the picture but I guarantee it won't be even close to the reality.

The riding has been more challenging than the himalayan bit and was relentless in its awfulness.  The road condition of NH29 was truly awful and add to that the bit prior to NH28 across the flood plains and the mighty impulse felt like it was shaking itself to death. I think, given how many 1000s of miles I have left to cover we might need to stick to more major national highways in this area.

We set off about 8 this morning having filled out the hotel comments book and posed for photos for the local paper. I was under the distinct impression that they were going to use us as a way of publicising how bad the road is. NH29 should instead read ND29 for national disgrace - whilst being far from the worst road I've ridden in the world it certainly shouldn't wear the title of highway. I wish them well in their efforts. Not only is the road bad they clearly lose their main electric supply most days. It looked liked a hard area to get by in and rural employment issues and low wages clearly play a major part in decision making about where to live. Many people I have met in Delhi are from these typical rural areas and move to the city in search of better wages but not necessarily better living conditions. Many work in the city but send funds back to support their families and only visit their wives/sons/daughters 2 or 3 times a year.

The bumpy riding continued for another 150 kms today and we were both relieved when we finally arrived in varanasi.  The hotel surya is an unusual treat and for once I am staying in quite a bit of luxury. It works out at about 15ukp a night and there's even a swimming pool! After a quick shower we headed out to see the famous ghats at varanasi and hoped to see the candles floating off down the river in the evening light show. Unfortunately, given the current of the River due to the flooding, all the boats  were tied up and it appeared slightly subdued. Whilst I respect other people's faith it's not really my thing and I was happy to walk away before the major crowds started to disperse. The ganges here appears dirtier than a dirty thing on a dirty day and if you weren't already dead when they popped you in I think you soon would be any way.

Still, it's now just after midnight and my CLEAN WHITE DUVET covered bed is calling me.
