We left Baraelli at about 9.30 am and rode towards Philibhit on what was classed as a yellow road on the map. This would equal a B road back in the UK and we were heading in the direction of Lakimpur. We travelled about 240kms and it was fairly hard going before we finally reached and indeed stopped at the dusty market town. We left at about 7 am and the road on leaving was busy but once clear of the silly early morning traffic we were out in the most beautiful stunning scenary I've seen for some time now. As it was early ish morning the whisps of smoke from the breakfast fires were still hovering around as the smartly dressed children were cycling their 50's style pushbikes to school. This was clearly a farming area and as such most dwellings were made from wood and had thatch roofs. This is the area that has been hit badly by the floods in the north east and as such all the livestock is now very much on the road. This first 70 kms of our days mileage was on a good surfaced road and added to the scenary made for a perfect ride. We had a quick chai stop and it sort of all went wrong from there!

We were planning on riding towards Basti but soon realised that the road was so bad that we'd never make it in daylight.

I would love to type out a full descripotion but this internet place isn't great nor is the guy sat to my left. I'll try and upload some photos and add to this once I've some wifi access.

Suffice to say, it was bad......very bad! We reached one largish town but both hotels were full so we were left with little choice but to ride the further 40+ kms in the dark towards Basti. During the journey I even had a Terrapin run out in front of me - that's a first! Once at Basti we managed to find a reasonable hotel and after 13 hours hard riding we were shattered. We had a beer and food in our room and crashed out for a much needed long sleep. We had done 343 KMS.

At 05.50 we were called on to ask if we'd like a paper!!!!

We left Basti at 10.30 ish and planned to ride the Highway 28 then 29 to Varanassi. Highway 28 was fine but Highway 29???? Terrible!

I have no idea where we are (please take note Geoff) but we are hoping to reach Varanassi tomorrow after yet another hard riding day I'm sure. You could loose a car in the pot holes on this road - I'm not kidding!

I'll upload some photos soon - time to try and go and find a much needed beer and get away from the nosy bloke to my left - yes YOU if you're still reading!

Mileage today 170 kms
