Hello folks

Week one ended with a game of golf and watching the Impala (antelope) run away from my miss-hits. Well honestly if they will get in my way.

Week two started with clambering into a teeny-tiny plane and making our way to Mfuwe for three days of safari. We were staying at the Nkwali lodge. Due to the proximity of animals and the fact we had obvious bait (a baby) we stayed at the main house for safety. However, it was fabulous and we had an amazing view. The hippos would often be right alongside us in the water (and indeed munching outside my room which kept me awake all night, along with a snoring baboon!). See photo.

We did morning and evening game drives. Over the three days we saw hippos, crocs, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, puku, impala, kudu, mongoose, civets, warthogs, bushbuck, baboons, every type of bird including birds of prey, vervet monkeys, hyena, leopards and a pride of lions! The lions we spotted at a distance across the river whilst having a gin and tonic and watching the best sunset ever.

The leopard was probably the most interesting. The first we knew of it was when we saw an impala hanging from a tree, clearly a leopard kill. It did look odd seeing an antelope dangling down over a branch. Our guide tracked down the leopard and we eventually saw it hidden in the bushes. It was only a cub. However, the best was yet to come. Later that night, in darkness, we came back to the tree where we had seen the impala. We were astonished to see the leopard cub and it's mum fast asleep in the tree! It was amazing - fuzzy photo though.

The game drives were astonishing with so many of these animals coming so close to the jeep. On several occasions we would turn a corner to find a giraffe or other animal right in front of us. We were warned off by an elephant on one occasion - we did not stop to argue!

The funniest moment was when having had our afternoon tea - how civilised - we were caught out when a cheeky monkey stole our cake!

The camp was amazing and we were truly spoilt. The game drives will never be forgotten. .......and between the two I saw the Big 5!

Back to the UK day after tomorrow - hope its warm there. x
