Deciding that we'd relaxed and enjoyed enough seaside, and that the tent wouldn't withstand a fourth battering from Baska's nightly megastorms, we packed our slightly damp things and headed for Venice. The Gods, however, had other plans for us, and arranged a series of tailbacks, accidents blocking the road, 30 minute toll-booth queues and some truly awful weather, turning a 4 hour drive into 8. However, we did get to pass through Slovenia on the way, and can report that it has trees, buildings and at least one casino.

Finally we made it to Mestre, across the lagoon from Venice itself, and the excellent Camping Fusina, where we decided we couldn't face the leaky tent and booked into a small cabin for €15 each - almost as cheap as camping and much easier.

After a short rest to allow Simon's brain to recover, we took the Vaporetto across the lagoon to Venice. A great way to see this amazing city for the first time. We wandered wide-eyed through the maze of tiny alleys, canals and pretty little bridges. The Tess had been here before, but I was amazed and almost had to poke myself to believe I was actually here. Venice is like I'd imagined it and then some. We almost immediately got lost (as seems to be inevitable in this city full of confused tourists squinting at maps), and then stumbled across a lovely restaurant in a pretty square, where we ate pizza and drank prosecco while the gondolas drifted by...
