Nice bright day today but still a bit on the cool side. Away around 9am. You go through the NSW / SA border not far from Broken Hill. Stopped for smoko at Olary which is a very small place along the highway. Spoke to a couple from QLD who were heading to Ceduna for an extended stay.

The country was still green until we approached our stopping point for the night which was Peterborough. The area around Peterborough is grain / sheep farming and it appears to be in a bit of a rain shadow. The road down was pretty good - maybe a bit narrow in places but there was hardly any traffic - maybe due to it being Melbourne Cup day????

We set up the van and went for a walk. Jan had read that the Indian Pacific (train) stops at the town at 1:30pm so we stopped off to have a look. The train station is deserted these days and there is only one train a day that stops there. In the good old days there were 100 trains a day stopping at the town as it was the junction point for all the various interstate rail gauges. Anyway, the train was 30 minutes late but we got to see it.

We passed the waiting time talking to a couple from southern VIC who were also having a sticky beak like us. Interesting that they were also finding the weather a bit cool. Said they had the fire going at home since May!!!

We carried on and walked the streets. The town is different to what we are used to seeing as most of the buildings are stone & cement construction - quite solid in appearance. There were the usual run down places but also some really nice ones that had been restored. The town generally gave the impression of a place that needed a bit more TLC. It was another of those places where you can buy a home for around $80 - 100K.

We stopped off for a beer at one of the locals - Greg gave the West End Draught a try out. It was actually better than their XXXX Gold but that was explained by the publican who told us that the XXXX was brewed in Adelaide, not Brisbane.

After a shower we went back to the pub for dinner - Chicken Schnitzel for $11 with help yourself veggies & salad - what a bargain - and it was nice chicken too. They had the heating on in the pub which was appreciated. The forecast was for 4 degrees overnight.
