The Sultan's Prince Jefri liked to spend his money and that of the government. We visited the largest and most expensive private guest house for royal visitors (now open as The Empire Hotel to recoup money). It is laden with marble and gold yet feels a bit like a ghost town come some kind of testing ground.

We then visited the most expensive theme park, Jerudong Park ($1bn in 1994), which was free to all (they forgot the costs for staff, safety standards and ongoing maintenance!). MJ gave a free concert to the people here in 1996 to celebrate the Sultan's 50th, the Sultan did not attend! They have now sold off the big rides and have a kept open only few small rides. The bigger phases of the park are now completely shut and nobody visits the open playground park. It is unbelievable, as the closed sections of the park look good but have big gaps where the rides once stood. No thrill rides left, as fun is not allowed! (actually since the Bruneians get a lot for free, now that it is chargeable there isn't much interest in the place)....we tried out the dodgems and almost got set on fire.

If you visit when it opens at 5.30pm bear in the mind the bizarre 20 minute prayer time which commences an hour later. All the rides close again for this period, except the staff can be found wandering around and sitting in offices.....

We now understand how the Griswalds felt when they got to Wallyworld and discovered it was shut. Here we come Hong Kong Disney.....
