It was rain when we woke this morning, so we pottered around a little. Did some handwashing (no, not in the bidet), as the washing machine is apparently broken and someone is supposed to becoming to fix it. Soon, But this is Italy, so soon might not mean much. I will ring the agency tomorrow to find out what's happening - I don't really fancy two weeks of handwashing when I'm on holidays.

When the rain (almost) stopped, we headed out, just wandering in the local area. We found ourselves at the river - the Tiber - and walked along it for a while, stopping for a fabulous coffee in a little place along the way, and passing the Synagogue in the Jewish Ghetto.

We turned left, back in the general direction of the Forum, and managed to walk in a circle, past the Capitoline hill and a section of the Forum. Whwn we worked out where we were, we made our way to the Bocca della Verita - the Mouth of Truth. We joined the line to try it out (and came away with hands intact!) and then walked through the church associated with it - Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

Circo Massimo wasn't far away, so that was our next stop. There's not a lot there apart from a grassy indentation, but it looked like it had been used for a festival on the weekend. We walked along beside the circus, imagining ancient crowds roaring as chariots sped round the course ...

A left turn at the end of the Circo Massimo set us towards the Colosseum. By the time we reached the Arch of Constantine the rain had started - lightly - again. We walked around the Colosseum, marvelling at its size and peeking through the bars between the lower arches. We've bought a 3 day Roma Pass, and we'll use that for entry to the Colosseum in the next day or two.

We came back towards our 'home' area along Via Dei Fori Imperiali, around the Piazza Venezia, and down Viale del Plebiscito to Largo di Torre Argentina, where we had dinner of pasta (with carbonara sauce for Tara, and limone sauce for me) and pizza boscaiola con funghi (Tara won't eat mushrooms). After dinner we walked around to a book and stationery shop nearly for some coloured pencils for Tara, before heading home for the night.
