Where I stayed
Harper's Ferry, West Virginia
After a leisurely morning at Phyllis' house, we finally, reluctantly headed out on the road again around noon. Our big stop today was Hershey, Pennsylvania and it surprised us in the same way that Niagara Falls had, by having a big amusement park with multiple roller coasters, tons of people, and all sorts of overpriced activities and goods; it was all very Disneyland-like. We found the only free activity in town, the factory tour, which is luckily all we wanted to see anyway. Unfortunately, it wasn't still in the factory, but had been made into an 'It's a Small World' type amusement ride with singing cows, instead of singing dolls. After the 'tour' we wandered through all the shops looking at all the ridiculous and overpriced Hershey merchandise, including Hershey bar and kiss pillows, giant bottles of Hershey syrup, and customized Hershey bars and wrappers. We started our drive to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, so Sigrid could show Madeline where she had worked two summers ago. We had to go through Maryland and about one minute of Virginia before we crossed into West Virginia. As per usual, we got there earlier than expected and luckily Sigrid still knew the area pretty well, so she showed Madeline around Bolivar, a town on the outskirts of Harpers Ferry. Madeline was again impressed by all the beautiful lightning bugs. After being unable to find working wi-fi, we settled-in for the night.
