Where I stayed
BEAUFORT LAKE STATE FOREST CAMPGROUND; U.P. Michigan
Today was a lazy start... we had slept at a rest stop between Sauk Centre and St. Cloud, Minnesota but got a better nights sleep than usual after trading spots (Madeline was now in the back seat and Sigrid in the passenger seat). We took turns washing our hair in the nice rest area sinks. Sigrid set up the stove and boiled water for tea and potatoes for lunch. So feeling cleaner, we headed to the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota! Now, unlike the "biggests" that we had seen in North Dakota, this one was in the middle of nowhere. After a bit of wandering through the town of Darwin (again with the lack of signage) we found it and took some photos. Unfortunately, it is encased in glass and it was a cloudy day, so the pictures aren't great, but for better pictures and the reason we drove out of our way to check it out, see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daZtLf6TceU The rest of the day was spent driving out of muggy, incredibly humid Minnesota, across Wisconsin (stopping to get gas from an adorable gas station owner with the cutest accent; we wanted to stay longer just to hear him talk, but he's a busy guy), and into the U.P. (Michigan's Upper Peninsula). Around dusk we found a state park on Lake Beaufort in which to camp and upon opening the car door, we were promptly swarmed by mosquitos. In the 10-15 minutes it took us to fill out the payment slip, set up the tent, and get our stuff into it, we had five times more bites than we had received in the first three days combined. We must have been quite a sight, dancing and flailing around, trying to keep the mosquitos off us and then giggling uncontrollably because we looked so ridiculous; it's a wonder we got the tent up at all! If it hadn't been so dark, it would have made for a hilarious video. The night was capped-off with alternating fierce winds, pouring rains, and rolling thunder and lightning.
