Where I stayed
Monkey Island Koh Rong

I was really on the fence about leaving Kampot after such a short time but I chose to join Donna and Sara for the journey to Koh Rung. I knew little about the island except for the
fact that there would be little to no electricity.

From the Sihanoukville pier we boarded the ferry via an average sized, unstable plank of wood. The same narrow plank was used to disembark. Meanwhile I couldn’t run up it fast enough, thrilled to touch land again after the two hour commute on rough seas. Once ashore we were greeted by a white, English lad with a Mohawk. We followed him along the short main strip of beach until arriving at the most talked about bungalows on the island, Monkey Island. It only took one night of indulgence, which ended with me dancing on the bar, to confirm the rumors that Monkey Island is synonymous with Koh Rung.

However, for those seeking a little more privacy I suggest Paradise Bungalows or Tree Top located further down the beach and around the bend.

For the fit and adventurous I recommend the hike to the other side. We were four brave souls who navigated through the unspoiled, tropical jungle, climbing ropes and boulders in an effort to reach the ghost town beach known as “broken heart.”

The blue skies appeared long enough for us to get a sense of the pristine, white sand beaches against the surreal, turquoise water before making the trek back to semi- civilization. No surprise, I arrived back to the bungalow desperate for a shower, even if cold is all I had, to learn that the water pipes were broken and they didn’t know when it would be back on.

It was time for me to return to modern day technology.
