Today was by far the best day yet in China with a visit to the Mutianyu portion of the Great Wall of China. CS provided a platform to connect with another interested tourist to arrange a day trip to the wall. I met Fernando who lives in Chicago and who was arriving this morning at 5:30AM on a business trip. Thankfully he was equally eager to hire a driver rather than deal with the bus. We arrived to the Wall at around 11ish and spent a good five hours on the Wall. We took the cable up to Gate 6, hiked passed Gate 1 off the beaten path and then all the way back and across to Gate 23 and beyond to areas not reconstructed. Once we got beyond the populated area and into the jungle we couldn't pick our chin up off the ground from the immense beauty. Sweating buckets from climbing the steep path and stairs we still had a two hour walk back to Gate 6 to catch the toboggan ride down. That was a blast and something that in the states would never fly. You mount this plastic chair with a break stick, no helmets, no seatbelts and no weight or age restriction. This Flintstone ride would have been even more of a blast if there wasn’t anyone in front of us but I would purposely break and allow a gap to form so I could take a few of the corners and chutes faster.

Fern and I were exhausted by the end of the day, actually with shame he admitted I wore him out. The long ride home was a perfect opportunity for enough of a nap to revitalize us for dinner that night. Fernando offered to treat me on his expense account but instead of hitting the Westin we opted for the recommended South Beauty restaurant; however, because it was in a mall and the Chinese eat dinner at 6:00PM, we were the only patrons at 10:00PM and felt a bit rushed. I thought we would’ve gone bar hopping but we were both completely spent. Hasta manana.
