The moment we arrived in Ubud I fell in love. The streets are lined with cute boutiques selling local artist designed jewelry, yoga style clothes, aromatherapy soaps and other handcrafts; not to mention that every other door leads to a spa, guest house or restaurant. During my short stay, way too short, I basically stayed within the square parameter of the following four main streets: Monkey Forrest Road, Jalan Hanoman, Ubud Main Road and Jalan Dewi Sita.

The first order of business was to find a guesthouse with a hot shower. Although there is an overwhelming abundance of visual stimulus the one thing I learned quickly is to watch my step rather than lose myself in window shopping, not an easy task. The sidewalk, if you want to call it that, has random deep dips and steps with lots of broken tiles. All too often finding my body moving forward with my head turned behind me which if I wasn't careful would’ve ended badly. Inevitably I would be distracted by a Balinese wood carving of a Buddha or Elephant head sticking out from behind a wall drawing me in like a magnet. Via a two feet high step I couldn’t help myself from popping my head in, even strolling through the perfectly landscaped garden to find another peaceful spa or guest house which depending on the street would sometimes dead end into a rice paddy as the backdrop.

The selection of fine restaurants was endless. I had a list of recommendations from David Meller but just walking by the temptation of fresh organic cafes and intoxicating smells of bbq pork ribs, I can tell you that every meal was outstanding. First night I enjoyed a basil beef stir fry and a couple glasses of Hatton Red wine followed by a taste of creative gelato. In lieu of the chocolate with chili or avocado chocolate chip, I settled on a double of lemon ginger sorbet and green tea.
