Note: The photo album integrates a previous visit to the cathedral with the current one.
Construction of the Magdeburg Cathedral, the first Gothic cathedral in the German-speaking world, began in 1209 and finished in 1520. An archaeological dig is now in progress inside the cathedral, investigating the remnants of an older Romanesque church which was built on the same site in 937 and which burned down in 1207. You will see some pictures of the dig in the photo album. I'm rather spoiled at this point by having seen Gothic cathedrals in Münster, Bamberg, Strasbourg, and Paris, so I'm not inspired too much by Magdeburg's. But it is always a pleasure to wander through these medieval sacred spaces.
