Doug, Gemma, and I went to Mainz for the big carnival parade which takes place annually on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, called Rose Monday here. This is really an amazing spectacle, and, as Doug pointed out, quickly shatters the stereotype of the serious German. Already on the 10 AM train to Mainz, a group of costumed characters were chugging Jägermeister and serenading their fellow passengers to accordion accompaniment. The parade was already in progress as we made our way from the Mainz train station. Interspersed between the countless marching bands and candy-tossing floats were politcal-cartoon floats, including a very nice one of the Statue of Liberty spanking George W. Bush.
