The Carribean sun and sand was warm welcome for our whitened, mostly European, winter-accustomed bodies. We arrived after a long flight from Paris in St. Maarten, one of many tropical destinations in this paradise of clustered islands. Having a four hour stopover before our onward flight to another island we hightailed it to the nearest beach to wet our toes. A mere five minute walk around the airport's perimeter found us soaking up the sun and swimming next to a little beach bar that played Bob Marley and had awesome mango smoothies and beer. Bliss on the beach.

However, due to the beach's close proximity to the airport, particularly the back end of the runway, every ten minutes a plane would come in for landing right overhead, and I mean right overhead, leaving the shuddering of its engines and a trailing waft of diesel or jet fuel in its aftermath. I snapped a photo of a small plane landing, but you have to imagine it was sometimes a jumbo four times the size. Occasionally a jumbo took off, rather than landed, which meant it taxied down to the beach we were at, turned around, pointed its back end at us and fired up its engines. This created an intense sand storm which coated those caught unaware from head to foot in a constant, painful blast of sand. It looked as if it literally blew that entire section of the beach away for several minutes before beginning its take-off.

A few mango smoothies, swims and sand-blasted tourists later we returned to the airport for our flight in a small plane, crammed full with our luggage, to Roadtown, Tortola. A boat then took us to our final, secret destination. We had travelled about twenty-five hours since departing from Vienna. The resort welcomed us with golf carts, great vibes, good wine and really superb food.
