Hi all - finally in the Philippines.  We had a good flight and it was plus 28 when we got here.  Hope you are all well.  We had a great experience driving from Manila to Batanges.  It's crazy how the traffic goes here.  Basically if you don't make eye contact with the person behind you  you just cut them off and go in!
There are people who sell things just on the street and walk in and out of cars that are driving along.
Pedestrians just seem to go wherever they want.
The Jeepney's (sp) are really cool and I hope to upload a picture later in the week.
We were surprised at the place we are staying.  It is beautiful and we can have our meals outside!  We have 2 swimming pools and a pool table outside as well.  Our hosts are fabulous.  They can't do enough to please us.  We are all pretty tired - but we went out to a restaurant tonight and had a great dinner of traditional food.  It cost all of 500 pesos each or about $10.00 each with a tip.
I bought 2  bottles of water - both 1 litre today and 2 small ice creams made with coconut milk and it cost me $1.70 or about 70 pesos.
Things are not very expensive - they are relatively cheap.  We learned a bit about SIDC our host co-op today but we were not all at the top of our game due to the long travel day and jet lag.  We are on our way home from the restaurant and we stopped to email and blog.
One thing that I did see today was a McDonald's or 2 - surprise surprise and some pizza huts.
We are all kicking back this evening as we have breakfast at 7 am and then we're off to visit some co-operatives.  Looking forward to that.  If you have any concerns they have hired armed guards for our guesthouse compound and we all feel safe.  They don't really feel that it is necessary - but that wanted us to feel safe.
Will try and blog tomorrow as we may have a connection at the guest house and we could do it at a more leisurely pace.  Keep well and we are having the experience of a lifetime!

from the deep freeze
Glad your trip has been great - sounds like a nice atmosphere right now - we woke up to 47 below this am - you know what I think about that - so your weather sounds real balmy. I will keep in touch and keep reading your posts (with envy) yf

Just wanted to say I'm actually starting to miss you! Hope you're having a great time. I know you'll be happy to here this but Edmonton set a new weather record low for January 29th -44C. I Can't believe your timing. I checked the long term forecast here & its forecast to be around 0 or above freezing on the 12th. I wonder what your filipino friends think when you tell them that its -44 back home. There's no way they could possibly imagine that. Really looking forward to your next update.
