After the whale watching, we headed south along the coast to Omaru. We were stopped by a police car as part of the Queen's birthday long weekend campaign to raise driver awareness about the importance of taking regular breaks. Anyway there was a free sausage sizzle and free tea/coffee so we were pretty happy!
We arrived at Omaru just after dark, and went to the Blue Penguin colony. We just missed the tour but we did see a little penguin attempting to cross the road. We parked the campervan and had a look with the torch along the rocks. Spotted two penguins and watched them for a while. Also saw 5 or 6 penguins a bit further away crossing the road.
We then headed to the Yellow Eyed Penguin colony, but it was too dark to see them. They come ashore mid afternoon and nest on the beach, but you are not allowed on the beach after 3pm.
We then headed to the Moeraki Boulders and camped overnight in the car park.
