Spent 3 weeks mainly clipping kiwi fruit vines, preparing them for summer picking. Very monotonous work and hard on the hands. This was followed by the monotony of having to go to the pub each night. It's a hard life!
The weather was probably just like back home - cold and wet. Even scraped frost off the car a couple of times. Pemberton is a very small place, 1 street, with not much on it apart from a pub. The hostel was made of wood which meant that it didn't keep any heat in. Compared to Perth, the hostel was a lot smaller, 40 people max, but mostly less than 10 people apart from at the weekends.
There were 4 other people working with me, 1 Japanese, 2 Germans and 1 Scottish. A nice mix. We were also joined by a Canadian couple most nights. They had slightly nicer jobs in a vineyard!
The locals are very friendly, if not a bit strange! Got invited to loads of BBQs and extra drinking sessions, which I thought would be rude not to attend. Consequently, on coming back to Perth I am only $30 better off than when we arrived in Oz a month ago. Still, every bit helps!
