Where I stayed

The end of our Tanzania leg of the trip is ending today.  Before we reach the border to cross back into Kenya, we stopped at Arusha Coffee Lodge for a final "briefing".  In short, we were given a questionnaire to fill in and this was our briefing!!!

The lodge was beautiful!  Why we couldn't stop to have lunch here was beyond us - they were setting it up for lunch and it all looked absolutely delectible.  All we had to look forward to was our boxed lunches again.  Definitely have to suggest having lunch here instead for future safaris - I'm sure people wouldn't mind paying for lunch here instead of putting up with a boxed lunch again (two days in a row).

There were a couple of nice shops at the lodge which of course I had to investigate.  The best shop of all - The Tanzanite Experience.  A fine jewellery shop selling only tanzanites!  This is what I wanted to get - a tanzanite from Tanzania.  And Arusha is the only place in the world where tanzanites are mined - at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.  There are not many tanzanites left to mine - it is expected the mines will run out in around ten years.  After that there will be no more.  So these stones will become very rare.

I was in heaven.  The only problem was that there were so many gems to look at, so little time.  I tried to rush as much as I could and finally decided on the gem I liked best.  The rest of our travel companions I don't think were too happy with me holding them all up, but I couldn't pass up the only opportunity I had had the whole trip to look and purchase an African tanzanite.   Besides, it was the day after my 40th birthday - I was entitled to a small treat, wasn't I?????
