Well, if I thought it was nice in Chania, I had a pleasant surprise waiting for me when I arrived in Rethymnon.  It was a good 2 or 3 degrees warmer than Chania, and was, fraknly, beautiful.  Rethymnon is a very interesting town, similar to Chania with its winding, cobbled streets that are surrounded on both sides by evidence of the successive Venetian and Turkish occupations.

It's a great town to just wander round in and get lost, because it's not difficult at all to find your way back to where you need to be due to its compactness (and easily locatable beverage dispenser landmarks.)

The hostel was quite basic, but nice.  Was the only guest there for about an hour, before an American girl showed up.  We basically spent most of the days wandering around, including doing some geocaching, and even managed to have a quick swim in the sea.  It was bloody cold to begin with, and we had to force ourselves to just go for it and jump in.  After you had acclimatised to it, it was actually pretty pleasant to cool off in the heat.

Not much else to say about Rethymnon, actually, other than that if you're ever on Crete, it's definitely worth a visit as an excellent example of what small town Greece is really like.  Beautiful.
