On the way from Gilroy to San Francisco we decided to drop in on the seaside town of Santa Cruz, to be honest the name sounds a lot nicer than the place itself. It's basically a smaller version of Blackpool with maybe better weather and a bit of surf rolling over the kelp beds and local seal population.
We checked out the local break called "Steamers" which is probably good surfing if the weather is right, but the waves were pretty small in comparison to North Shore and the surfers not a patch on the local Hawaiian's. Next we walked down the pier and had some takeout seafood (read - grilled cheese sandwich for Maud) whilst watching the fishermen and listening to the seals honking beneath the pier. We finished our afternoon in Santa Cruz by walking down the boardwalk (dodging the bums and drunks) then playing some of the classic arcade games including the shooting alley were you shoot the characters and they move or play music.
I guess Santa Cruz was enjoyable in a childhood reminiscent way, remembering those good old days at a seaside resort with the smell of chips and sea air and the cuddly toys you can win for a million tokens, but I still don't think it lives up to what the name suggests in your imagination. Bring on San Fran.
