The road initially was very good and we were making good progress. After about an hour the pot holes began to become more and more prevalent and the minibus was reduced to a crawl at some points.
We spent the rest of the day in Chivay (the main town in the canyon) after a buffet lunch that included alpaca....
The next day we were up for 6am to go to Cruz Del Condor to see the famous birds.
The road by now was awful and at some points we were driving through rivers in minibus. We really could have done with a 4x4 but we were stuck with the bus. We reached Cruz Del Condor and all we could see was cloud.
Unfortunately there were no condors to be seen all day and we arrived back in Arequipa at abut 5pm after some crazy driving in the mist on the way back.
That evening we met up with Brad (an Australian guy we had met on the tour) and had a few beers/vinos. He obviously has the Aussie skill of sniffing out a good bar as we ended up in a stylish roof terrace bar complete with comfy leather sofas (plus the drinks were very cheap !).
The Colca Canyon is about 150km north of Arequipa and we joined a group to spend two days up there to see the famous condors. The drive there took about 5 hours with a few stops on the way mostly through arid desert.
