Day 3 was the nicest day of the trail. There were a couple of climbs to passes, but nowhere near as steep or as high as the previous day,and the trail passed through some pretty cloud forest, and there were lots of flowers beside the track. It was still slow going though, because we were all so sore from the day before! My pack felt really heavy when I pulled it on that morning!
We also passed by many Inca ruins on day 3, which were interesting to explore, and 90% of the trail we were walking on this day was original inca road, and it was pretty incredible to be walking in the same place where the inca messengers would have walked over 500 years ago.
The last section of the trail on day 3 was known as ¨the gringo killer¨ because it was a long downhill section with very steep, extremely narrow steps, and after the previous day´s effort, it was really hard on the legs!
Fortunately, no-one fell to their deaths in our group, but I did slip and fall a little further on after the trail had flattened out, and tore a hole in my trousers, and took some skin off my knee. It wasn´t a nasty injury, but it didn´t make the rest of the downhill bits any easier on my poor knees!
The descent into camp on the 3rd day had tremendous views of the mountains around Machu Picchu, and although we couldn´t yet see the citadel itself, it was exciting to know that it was just around the corner.
