Our Italy experience (so far - returning again briefly in a couple weeks) had 4 distinct parts - Lake Como, Asti, Portofino/Cinque Terre, and Venice.
We knew something was up transition-wise when we asked Martin, the friendly Swiss guy at our hotel in St. Moritz, about places to stay in Lake Como and his smiling but stern parting words were, "...but remember - different country, different standards..." The drive from St. Moritz down to Lake Como is a blast - you drop what feels like straight down around hairpin turns and along a rushing river much of the way. Passed lots of guys on motorcycles who looked like they were having a rather good time. So, we crossed the border from Switzerland into Italy and found ourselves looking at each other saying "What is going on here?" Suddenly you go from green fields and trees to concrete, graffiti and billboards and you begin to wonder. We'd come all the way down from Stockholm and not seen any sort of transition like this. That said, by the time we got down to Como and the western side of the lake all the rough stuff was forgotten since Como and the small towns to its north were right on par with the best steep slope waterfronts we've seen anywhere.
